Lost Key Golf Club is certified as an Audubon International Silver Signature Sanctuary and continues to promote environmental stewardship and protect the natural resources of Florida.
Audubon International (AI) provides programs that promote environmentally sound land management and conservation of natural resources. The Audubon Signature Cooperative Sanctuary Program was established for land use projects in the planning and development stages. The Signature Program provides Audubon International and Lost Key Plantation a common frame of reference, guidance and direction by which the golf course and associated development can be environmentally designed, constructed, managed and evaluated.
Through the Signature Program, Audubon International scientists worked with Lost Key Plantation to develop and implement design criteria and management strategies for the land using sustainable resource management practices. A Natural Resource Management Plan for the property was prepared and implemented.
This plan encompassed integrating agronomic and environmental sciences to produce an environmentally sensitive approach to golf course development and management, and addresses the following environmental focus areas: Environmental Planning, Wildlife Conservation & Habitat Enhancement, Water Quality Management, Waster Reduction and Management and Water Conservation.
Every aspect of Audubon International programs promotes sustainable resource management objectives. The Audubon International approach is unique in that it integrates environmental and agronomic practices, and promotes developing and manufacturing golf courses as ecosystems. By managing golf courses and associated developments as ecosystems, we attempt to take advantage of, or mimic, naturally functioning ecosystems. Sustainability is a natural outcome of this management perspective.
